JRA Sculptural Art Project
Theme:
Honoring the Earth Through Indigenous Wisdom
The Project
Joseph Rock Arboretum is accepting applications for the artist in residence program. This residency will allow visual artists to be hosted and create in the stunning natural beauty of Kona, Hawaii. Be a part of this legacy to bring people closer to nature.
In 2023 the JRA received a grant from One Tree Planted, a very special organization that supports tree planting all over the world. Their support has enabled us to plant a beautiful selection of hardwood trees and plants, and deeply engage with our community. The area, Tree Walk (5 acre blue section on the map) is the site of the JRA Sculptural Art Project, which is now ready to receive the gift of art. Art represents the best of human creativity and heartfelt connections with the rest of the living beings on our mother, the Earth. Indigenous people have been caretaking the planet throughout human history. We intend to honor native people throughout the world by showcasing their art in both permanent and temporary installations. This exhibit will help bring focus and inspiration to the public as we strive to care for all living beings and honor indigenous wisdom in particular in the stewardship of our lands. The JRA is seeking art works to be placed in the garden as a connection and community gathering area. Some of the most beautiful gardens in the world have sculptures that combine art and the botanical beauty of the plants and trees within. Featured artists will have their bio and a statement of work, which will be displayed on the JRA website. Artists will receive hosted accommodations for three weeks in the garden visitor cabin so they may set their piece, and enjoy the arboretum and Hawaii.
How do you honor your culture, your relationship with the natural world, or reverence for the Earth and all beings? We want to see and understand your unique expression.
The JRA Advisory Board will select pieces that represent reverence, creativity, engagement, and lasting materials.
